about us

 Welcome to Beyond My Leash!

Geneviève spent several years volunteering at animal shelters in her youth, which allowed her to develop a deep passion for dogs. However, her true adventure began when she decided to train her new puppy, Duke. Pictured next to her in the photos, he is the best companion she has ever had. She rescued him from a puppy mill when he was only six weeks old. Duke quickly demonstrated impressive abilities; at nine weeks old, he could sit and lie down on command, and even ask for the door. At three months, he was able to relieve himself on command, retrieve his toys, stay close to her, and come when called. By six months old, Duke was fully housebroken and walking off-leash. The bond they shared impressed everyone around them, to the point where she no longer even needed to speak to him for him to understand her expectations.

Recognizing Duke's potential, Geneviève decided to train him as a partner in the rehabilitation of dogs with behavioral issues, particularly those related to fear. She collaborated with the SPCA and the Humane Society on rehabilitation and training missions. At the same time, she served for over 20 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, where she joined a unit with a canine section, strengthening her passion day after day. It was then that she decided to help more dog owners strengthen their bond with their canine companions.

Geneviève graduated from the Canadian Canine Training Academy in 2010 and from Animal Behavior College in 2013, where she now serves as a student mentor. These two institutions allowed her to learn a variety of training techniques, giving her a more versatile approach to working with dogs. She firmly believes that every dog is unique, and therefore, methods that work for one may not necessarily be effective for another. She adapts her training style to each dog's individual needs, using different approaches when necessary.

Agility classes (Level 1 & 2)

Contact us

Dog agility is a sport where handlers guide their dogs through a timed obstacle course, emphasizing teamwork, communication, and canine athleticism, with obstacles like jumps, tunnels, and weave poles.

What it is:

Dog agility is a sport where a handler directs their dog through a pre-set obstacle course, aiming for speed and accuracy.

  • The Course:

Agility courses typically include a variety of obstacles, such as:

    • Jumps: Dogs leap over hurdles of varying heights.

    • Tunnels: Dogs run through tunnels, often curved to make it harder to see the exit.

    • Weave Poles: Dogs weave through a series of poles, entering to the right of the first pole and weaving through each of the others.

    • A-frame: Dogs must run up one side, across the top, and down the other side, touching the "contact zone" at the bottom of the board as they exit.

    • Seesaw: Dogs must walk across the seesaw, balancing on the end, and then slide down the other side.

    • Dog Walk: Similar to an A-frame, but with a horizontal plank in the middle.

    • Pause Table: Dogs must stop on a table for a set amount of time.

  • How it works:

    • Dogs run off-leash and are guided by their handler's voice commands and body language.

    • Handlers cannot touch the dog or the obstacles.

    • The goal is to complete the course quickly and accurately, with penalties for mistakes or knocking down obstacles.

  • Benefits:

    • Physical and Mental Stimulation: Agility training provides dogs with a great workout, both physically and mentally.

    • Bonding: It strengthens the bond between the dog and handler through teamwork and communication.

    • Socialization: Agility training can help dogs socialize with other dogs and people in a positive environment.

  • Getting Started:

    • Start with basic obedience: Ensure your dog has good foundation skills like recall, loose-leash walking, and basic commands.

    • Start with the basics: Begin with simple obstacles and gradually increase the difficulty as your dog progresses.

    • Make it fun: Agility training should be enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Satisfied Customers

Hi Geneviève,

I just wanted to let you know that your help with Jesse has really paid off!

Today, we were able to go inside a pet friendly store and she followed her heel and sit/stay command. She did bark at a man a few times but he was trying to pet her multiple times despite her backing away and it was mostly her warning him to back off. We even practiced some obedience and she did all of her commands without an issue!

Thanks a lot,

Jessee

We are having a great time. Remington is enjoying his socialization with the other dogs and we can’t thank you enough for the help you’ve given us especially last night with recommending a new harness for him. My wife took him for a walk this morning and it’s night and day. We are looking forward to doing more classes And more levels with you .

Thank you Genevieve for your excellent work with us and our new puppy Freddie.

You took the time to educate us on how a dog thinks and why they behave in certain ways and this was invaluable.

Getting a puppy during a pandemic was not easy, as socialization was nearly impossible, but you gave us many tips and tricks to get us started.

Freddie is on his way to being a great dog and we will definitely be using your services in future - you are truly a canine expert.

Thank you, Elise, Fran and Freddie ❤️🐾❤️

Genevieve has a beautiful way with dogs and people alike. She is able to help the humans understand their pups and their pups understand their humans. She is patient, professional, knowledgeable and willing to take care of the “students” in her classes. Anytime we have had a question for Genevieve, she is quick to help. I would recommend her courses to anyone looking for a pup and looking to train their fur baby.

Genevieve,
First off, thank you for a wonderful experience in the Basic Obedience class. Having an instructor who supports her students and encourages them makes all of the difference in the world. Macy & I are looking forward to the next adventure/challenges of the Advanced class!

Hi Genevieve,

Chris and I are really happy with the lessons so far! We drove away feeling like we understood some really significant lessons. We were really happy and after tonight, I not only gained psychological insight into training Frankie, you also gave us some valuable insight for our other dog Gumby. You confirmed my suspicions that I had about Gumby being top dog, not Frankie.

It was a really great session. I will be doing some solid training with Frankie this week again.

Patience is key. He will not be rewarded until he does what I want. I am boss, not him!

Boo-Boo story,

When Boo-Boo reached the age of 13 months, we started noticing some changes in his behaviour. He would bark and growl at strangers when we went out for car rides orwalks around the neighbourhood. He became very territorial around the nouse, barking and growling at visitors who would come into our home. When he grabbed a little girl’s arm and shook it (she was wearing a thick snow suit), alarm bells went off; we needed to do something about our dog’s behaviour right now! So we looked for a dog trainer in our area.

We found Genevieve. When she came to our house to evaluate Boo-Boo’s behaviour, he lunged towards her and growled. In Genevieve’s initial evaluation, she told us that Boo-Boo’s behaviour was related to dominance and fear. To get rid of the dominance problem, we would need to be more authoritative with him ( to basically show him who’s the boss).
We worked with Genevieve over a period of eight weeks to complete the basic obedience training. After only two weeks, we could already see his behaviour improving. Now that we were leaders of the pack, he backed off on trying to dominate everyone he met. Being less dominant and fearful, he became happier.
Now that Boo-Boo has successfully completed the basic ovedience training, he’s a much more balanced dog! Wekeep on practicing Basic Obedience every day to keep Boo-Boo busy and focused. We also continue our Saturday “let’s-tire-out-Boo-Boo” walk to the off-leash park and back (1h45m, including lots of time off leash).
Thank you very much Genevieve for making such a big difference in Boo-Boo’s life!
— Isabelle and Boo-Boo
Belle Bella,

Bella was dominant to the point of barking and lunging at dogs and people. After lesson 4, while on walk tonight I ran into 8 crazy dogs yapping and out of control around Bella. I had a priceless doggie owner moment. Bella sat, let the yappy dogs doing their thing and had barely any corrections (2 light). Very proud!! Thank you Genevieve for all the training so far!! C’est officiel Bella est sortable encore plus!

Geneviève is an excellent trainer with our Cotton de Tuléar. She is very knowledgeable and she knows to read our dog and me too. She is very energetic, and passionate at what she does. I recommend her whole heartedly as a trainer. She is perfectly bilingual
— Hugues Richard
The BEST dog trainer we’ve had. She is a behavioral dog trainer, certified and very patient. Dogs need trainers, but humans also need to be adequately prepared and trained for the type of dogs you have. I highly recommend Genevieve. :)
